Robert is an interdisciplinary fisheries scientist working as a professor for Integrative Fisheries Management at HU and the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries. One of his interests is understanding how selective fisheries, through the selective removal of fish with certain traits, can cause rapid fisheries-induced evolution. To that end, he and his group have developed experimental selection lines of size-selectively harvested zebrafish (Danio rerio) selection lines and shown that over just five generation of harvest selection a range of behavioural and cognition-related traits have been altered. These changes have a genetic underpinning, indicating evolutionary adaptations. At SCIoI the key question will be to explore whether fisheries-induced selection has also evolutionarily altered individual and collective cognition of groups of zebrafish and to use the experimental data to inform a new class of agent-based models in collaboration with other SCIoI members, specifically Pawel Romanczuk in Project 52.
