7D%2C%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22author%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22Thorsten%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Pachur%22%7D%2C%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22editor%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22J.%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Culbertson%22%7D%2C%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22editor%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22A%2C%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Persfors%22%7D%2C%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22editor%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22H.%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Rabagliati%22%7D%2C%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22editor%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22V.%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Ramenzoni%22%7D%5D%2C%22abstractNote%22%3A%22It%20is%20commonly%20assumed%20that%20there%20are%20qualitatively%20distinct%20cognitive%20strategies%20that%20underlie%20decision%20making.%20Because%20cognitive%20strategies%20differ%20in%20how%20information%20is%20processed%2C%20predecisional%20information%20search%20offers%20a%20window%20onto%20these%20strategies.%20Using%20a%20bottom-up%20approach%2C%20we%20examine%20whether%20predecisional%20information%20search%20actually%20reflects%20the%20use%20of%20distinct%20strategies.%20Specifically%2C%20we%20investigate%20the%20extent%20to%20which%20the%20heterogeneity%20in%20people%26%23039%3Bs%20predecisional%20information%20search%20in%20a%20risky%20choice%20task%20reflects%20qualitatively%20distinct%20patterns%20that%20should%20emerge%20when%20people%20use%20distinct%20strategies.%20Our%20analysis%20takes%20into%20account%20the%20distribution%20of%20attention%20across%20attributes%20and%20transitions%20between%20attributes.%20Using%20cluster%20analysis%2C%20we%20find%20just%20two%20qualitatively%20different%20clusters%20with%20low%20separability%3A%20one%20characterized%20by%20balanced%20attention%20to%20all%20attributes%20and%20by%20transitions%20occurring%20mostly%20within%20the%20same%20option%2C%20and%20one%20characterized%20by%20a%20focus%20on%20outcome%20information%20and%20by%20frequent%20attribute-wise%20transitions.%20These%20two%20clusters%20were%20also%20associated%20with%20differences%20in%20people%26%23039%3Bs%20choice%20behavior.%20The%20distribution%20of%20these%20clusters%20varied%20considerably%20across%20individuals%2C%20but%20less%20so%20across%20choice%20problems%2C%20suggesting%20that%20information%20search%20is%20not%20necessarily%20guided%20by%20features%20of%20the%20choice%20problem%5Cu2014this%20result%20challenges%20current%20theories%20on%20strategy%20selection.%20Our%20results%20challenge%20the%20common%20assumption%20that%20heterogeneity%20in%20predecisional%20information%20search%20is%20differentiated%20along%20clearly%20distinct%20information%20processing%20policies.%20Instead%2C%20the%20differentiation%20seems%20to%20fall%20into%20just%20two%20broad%20clusters%5Cu2014one%20resembling%20rational%20principles%20of%20expectation%20computation%2C%20the%20other%20reflecting%20heuristic%20principles%20that%20neglect%20probabilities%5Cu2014with%20considerable%20variability%20within%20each%20cluster.%22%2C%22proceedingsTitle%22%3A%22Proceedings%20of%20the%2044th%20Annual%20Meeting%20of%20the%20Cognitive%20Science%20Society%22%2C%22conferenceName%22%3A%22%22%2C%22date%22%3A%222022%22%2C%22eventPlace%22%3A%22%22%2C%22DOI%22%3A%22%22%2C%22ISBN%22%3A%22%22%2C%22citationKey%22%3A%22%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%5C%2F%5C%2Fescholarship.org%5C%2Fuc%5C%2Fitem%5C%2F4fx494f9%22%2C%22ISSN%22%3A%22%22%2C%22language%22%3A%22en%22%2C%22collections%22%3A%5B%5D%2C%22dateModified%22%3A%222026-06-09T12%3A23%3A34Z%22%7D%7D%5D%7D
