Exploring intelligence
Starting from SCIoI’s analytic-synthetic loop and the example behaviors that provided the theoretical foundations for SCIoI’s scientific framework, the volume explores different research perspectives, answering questions about interdisciplinarity, research methods, and experimental setups while providing a carousel of our scientific highlights and reflections on intelligence itself. How do we make good decisions? When does behavior become contagious? Did you know that some robotic hands work with, that event cameras are the new frontier of robotic vision, or that some fish back in Mexico have devised a very creative method to confuse predators?
All of the above serves as preparation for the chapter on the nine candidate principles of intelligence, each of which is defined, artistically illustrated, and explained in detail by our researchers through case studies, examples, thoughts, and experiments. By reading these articles one after the other, the reader will hopefully start recognizing a storyline; one in which the principles of intelligence gradually emerge and become clearer, more concrete, and more relatable to our everyday reality.
So, you might ask, does this book offer a final answer to the question of what intelligence is? No, but it attempts to give the reader a framework for asking the question differently. The nine principles provide points of connection between disciplines, behaviors, experiments, and ideas, offering a glimpse into how a science of intelligence can take shape.
And there’s more: the volume goes beyond the science to explore aspects of science communication, diversity, and data management, giving insights into what it takes to bring a large and ambitious interdisciplinary project to life. We hope this volume will bring you a little closer to the understanding the research behind intelligence –– and, ultimately, intelligence itself.
