SUMMARY:Berlin Summer School of Artificial Intelligence and Society
DESCRIPTION:Berlin is currently facing numerous challenges\, ranging from the modernization of public administration to the adaptation to climate change\, from traffic planning to the regulation of the housing market\, the implementation of an efficient health care system and creating incentives for a more sustainable lifestyle with the involvement of citizens. \nIn this context\, the effective application of artificial intelligence approaches promises a better understanding of processes\, e.g. spatial\, temporal or environmental developments through the integration of sensor data. On this basis\, they may offer a wide range of new design options. However\, with their high demand for resources like energy and water for cooling and technical infrastructure\, the development and implementation of these solutions demands careful consideration and planning. \nGiven the highly complex and human-centred nature of urban systems\, the practical implementation of artificial intelligence technologies in cities requires a uniquely multidisciplinary lens underpinned by ethical considerations. For this reason\, this Summer School offers a space to explore initial approaches to critically reflect on the prerequisites and effects of new technologies in the course of various aspects of the “urban”. Using a transdisciplinary approach\, participants will develop an in-depth understanding of how aspects of sustainability can be applied in smart cities and to what extent technologies such as AI must be understood as opportunities and/or threats for sustainable urban development. \nThe summer school is organized by BIFOLD\, Science of Intelligence and the Weizenbaum Institute and designed for doctoral students who are passionate about machine learning\, data management and the impact of cutting-edge AI on society. \nFind further information here. \nImage credit: BIFOLD

SUMMARY:Berlin Science Week 2023 – David Bierbach\, “From Chaos to Order: How Large Collectives Benefit From Being in a Critical State Between Complete Disorder and Strong Structure”
DESCRIPTION:SCIoI member David Bierbach showcases the RoboFish demonstrator and invited the audience to explore collective behaviour and its connection to robotics and artificial intelligence. Inspired by the rules that shape fish and bird swarms\, the project that underlies this demonstrator explores the complexities of social interactions. The robotic fish integrates itself into groups of live fish and enable thus the study of social processes within groups – something that is not possible without Robo Fish! In this demonstrator\, you can steer the Robo Fish and test how well you would act as a “real” fish. The Robo Fish holds immense research potential\, fostering collaborations with biologists\, roboticists and physicists.

SUMMARY:SCIoI+MoA CollActive Materials Event\, “Woraus Ist Deine Zukunft Gemacht?”: IdeenLabor\, Kombucha Workshop\, and Family Activities!
DESCRIPTION:What do sensitive robots\, gripping plants and creative bacteria have in common? Let’s find out together! In “CollActive Materials” experimental laboratory\, a joint project of SCIoI and MoA\,  research and society come together to explore the materials of the future: Can they be more active or more intelligent than the materials of today? Come by to discover surprisingly living materials\, and tell us your ideas and wishes for the future.\n\nRegister now\, and bring the kids too! The event is in German. \nKontakt \nDr. Kristin Werner\, Koordinatorin CollActive Materials \nKristin.werner@hu-berlin.de \n0176/32445222 \n

SUMMARY:Ralf Kurvers at “Meet the Scientist”\, Humboldt Forum
DESCRIPTION:“Should I listen to you – or not?” \nShould I listen to you? Or should I ignore you when making up my mind? And what factors shape my decision-making? Questions like these are the field of behavioral researchers from the Cluster of Excellence “Science of Intelligence”. Here\, psychologists\, computer scientists\, biologists\, neuroscientists\, educational scientists\, philosophers\, and physicists work together to find out more about collective intelligence and human rationality. \n\n\nOne of these researchers is Ralf Kurvers. He has developed an interactive survey for the exhibition “After Nature” that aims at finding out more about decision-making processes in social environments – particularly\, the value of “social information”. Questions he is trying to answer are\, for instance: Do younger individuals use more social information than older generations? Are there differences across cultures in their use of social information? And is it\, in general\, good or bad to use social information? \nIn the series “Meet the Scientist”\, Ralf Kurvers presents data collected in the Humboldt Lab over the last six months. He will give insights into his findings and the fascinating field of collective psychology. \nRegister here! https://www.museumsportal-berlin.de/en/events/soll-ich-auf-dich-hoeren-oder-nicht-neue-for[…]-zur-kollektiven-entscheidungsfindung-mit-ralf-kurvers/ \n\n\n  \n\n

SUMMARY:Berlin Science Week Talk\, Fritz Francisco: Why Behaviour? Why We Behave the Way We Do
DESCRIPTION:From French photographers\, Austrian naturalists and English adventurers – all have been equally fascinated by the way we are affected by\, and interact with our surroundings. It is the intricate interplay between self and others\, known and unknown\, present and future that makes behaviour so hard to grasp and exciting to study. Ethology\, the study of animal behaviour tackled this for ages. However\, it has recently undergone a change\, with digital assistance\, such as cameras\, as well as computers and their algorithms. Yet\, the underlying object of interest – behaviour – has not changed! Fritz Francisco will discuss what behaviour actually is and wish to make us see our own behaviour in a slightly different light. \nPlease register on the BSW website here

SUMMARY:Berlin Science Week Talk\, Ralf Kurvers and Pawel Romanczuk: Collective Intelligence or Collective Stupidity? From Fish Schools to Human Groups. Exploring swarm intelligence in fish and humans
DESCRIPTION:Scientists Pawel Romanczuk and Ralf Kurvers will explore swarm intelligence in fish and humans\, investigating the role of single individuals and social interactions in collective decisions\, also exploring when collectives make good decisions\, and when they go wrong. \nIn this talk\, David Bierbach will present results from fascinating experiments with a clonal fish\, the Amazon molly (Poecilia formosa)\, to test whether near-identical rearing conditions can dampen individual differences in behavior. In sharp contrast to predictions\, researchers found substantial individual variation in behavior among genetically identical individuals raised under highly standardized environments. \nBut how does this individuality allow swarms\, herds and shoals of animals to perform highly coordinated collective behaviors like synchronized movements or rapid consensus decision-making? Using a robotic fish\, Bierbach and his team also explored the effects of individual differences in behavior on collective movement\, migration and the emergence of group-specific behavioral patterns\, and showed that individual behavior plays a crucial role in shaping collective patterns\, with some animal personalities having greater impact on the group’s performance than others. \nWatch the interview of David Bierbach for the BSW here. \nPlease register on the BSW website here

SUMMARY:Berlin Science Week Talk\, Guillermo Gallego: Giving Robots T-Rex-Inspired Eyes
DESCRIPTION:Ever heard of neuromorphic cameras? They are bio-inspired sensors that mimic the transient visual pathway. These cameras do not acquire pictures or full images as a normal video camera. Instead\, they sense only intensity changes at every pixel as they occur with microsecond resolution (called “events” or “spikes”). These cameras offer many advantages compared to traditional image-based cameras\, such as high speed\, a very high dynamic range\, and low power consumption\, and are slowly finding their way into computer vision and robotics applications. Come to learn more about these novel cameras! \nPlease register on the BSW website here
