SUMMARY:Airbound: Sensing Collective Futures
DESCRIPTION:  \nFrom molecule to atmosphere: the global climate crisis and the possible futures of our coexistence will be decided by means of air. We are »airbound« – bound through air. \nHow can we create a sense of what is coming? And what will connect us in the future? \nThe exhibition »Airbound« features climate fictions and speculative everyday scenarios – developed in an open process by collaborators from society\, science\, and design. Through speculative installations\, »Airbound« provides space to discuss urgent geopolitical issues. At stake are the contested knowledge of the climate\, the destructive use of joint resources\, and the injustices that are inherently connected. Air is critically bound to these – as collective\, active\, and intelligent material. \nThe interactive exhibits problematize the technical promises of climate engineering and life under the pressure of ever-increasing emissions. They present designerly and research-based approaches to what air carries with it and to the intimate processes of breathing. What kind of air would we inhabit once climatic tipping points have been passed? In which ways do local approaches and other technologies offer hope? What new (breathing) practices and routines are we developing as individuals and collectives? \nThe exhibition and all accompanying events and workshops are free of charge. \nThe exhibition rooms are wheelchair accessible. \n  \nEvents & Workshops \nOct 19\nVernissage \nOct 20\nPublic guided tour\n(in German) \nOct 21\nSpeculative Workshop\, CLB Berlin\n(in German\, registration required) \nNov 04\nSpeculative Workshop\, Museum für Naturkunde\n(in English\, registration required) \nNov 09\nFinissage

SUMMARY:“Future of Air - Speculative Workshop Series” - Breathing in\, Breathing out (in English)
DESCRIPTION:Workshop title: Breathing in\, Breathing out\nTheme: Practices of Air\nWhere: YOGA at Lobe Block \n  \nWe are breathing beings. Every breath reconnects us to ourselves\, to our fellow beings\, and to our environment. The act of breathing usually does not require any thought. Yet\, our emotions and memories have a strong impact on our respiratory system – and vice versa. \nHow can we tune into the vital experience that makes air flow through our bodies? What do the molecules travelling through my lungs carry with them? Nourishment\, pollutants\, memories? \nWhere do we – individually and collectively – intersect through this bodily practice with the planetary carbon cycle? What if the access to clean air would become a mandate for societies in the foreseeable future? In this workshop\, somatic exercises are intertwined with questions of planetary breathability. \nWith an input by Yoonha Kim (HU Berlin/Matters of Activity\, Anthropology) \nFrom 16 years\, free of charge. \nRegistration open until 11.05.2023 \n  \nAbout the workshop series:\nAir is invisible. Air surrounds us and connects us – as people and as living beings. Air is material. What happens when we become aware of air? What\ndoes air tell us? How can we deal with it – now and in the future\, individually and as societies? In the workshop series „Futures of Air“ we invite you to speculate about the futures of air – together with researchers from the Clusters of Excellence „Matters of Activity“ and „Science of Intelligence“. In three independent co-design workshops\, we explore the properties of air as a material\, negotiate its role in our lives\, and imagine possible (and impossible) futures with it. We are looking for people ages 16 and up who are interested in speculating with us – people interested in materials\, experimenters and the curious. \nFurther information and registration at: www.collactive-materials.de \n

DESCRIPTION:Workshop title: Von Kontrolle zu Kooperation\nTheme: Air as Technology\nWhere: silent green Kulturquartier \n  \n\n\nBetonindustrie\, Verbrennungsmotor\, Google-Suchanfrage – Technologie wird heute an ihrer CO₂-Emission gemessen. \nAb 16 Jahren\, kostenfrei. \nRegistrierung offen bis zum 07.05.2023 \n  \n\n\nAbout the workshop series:\nAir is invisible. SUMMARY:Berlin Science Week 2022 - Collective Materials Workshop\, "What is the Future Made Of?"
DESCRIPTION:Nature is a great designer. Through billions of years of evolution – of design trial and error (or re-route) – it has come up with uniquely functional and beautiful materials. It uses simple materials in clever ways. Natural materials are often sophisticated in structure and function\, yet they are made from simple\, abundant resources. More than that\, they are designed to be part of a natural cycle of making and breaking down – no material is wasted. CollActive Materials\, together with the speculative designer Emilia Tikka\, invites you to a hands-on speculation workshop. Find out how researchers from Matters of Activity and Science of Intelligence use bio-design in their work – and make up your very own version of a bio-inspired future. \nVisit the BSW website page for more info \nPhoto taken from Berlin Science Week \nThe Zoom Link will be sent the day before the lecture.

SUMMARY:MEET THE SCIENTIST at HU Labor With Martin Rolfs\, “Movement in the Eye of the Beholder. How Looking Shapes Visual Perception”
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The eyes are the Marco Polo of the human body — they travel incessantly across the visual world in front of us\, curious for interesting or even insightful information. Tracking someone’s eye movements\, therefore\, provides insights into their perception and cognition — the eyes are indeed a window to the mind.\nThat eye movements are necessary for perception to occur in the first place was shown in experiments in the second half of the last century\, when scientists showed that preventing eye movements (e.g.\, through paralysis or by stabilizing an image on the retina) leads to the rapid fading of perception within a fraction of a second. \nThe Zoom Link will be sent the day before the lecture.

DESCRIPTION:Scholar Minds\, in collaboration with Science of Intelligence and the Berlin School of Mind and Brain\, would like to invite you to a special conference on the topic “Mental Health in PhD students: The role of graduate schools\, the integration of international students and impostor syndrome”. The event will take place online on October 19th from 10AM-6PM. The event will be held in English and is free of charge. \nThe event will incorporate keynotes\, workshops\, and hackathons to work on improving the current situations for early career researchers. The conference was initiated by Scholar Minds & the Berlin Cluster of Excellence “Science of Intelligence” and is a collaborative project of several mental health initiatives across Germany. \nWe are pleased to present a keynote lecture by Gordon Feld who will give an overview of how Germany needs to address the structural challenges of the academic system to best promote early career researchers. \nFurther\, we offer workshops on a selection of recurrent topics for early career researchers such as impostor syndrome (Mental Health Collective)\, stress management (Innerminder) or how to coordinate your projects (Scholar Minds). \nAnother highlight of the conference will be several hackathons tackling current challenges of the academic world such as how to improve the situation for international early career researchers in Germany (MATH+)\, bridging mental health and academic (N2 Network) or how the perfect graduate school (Dragonfly Mental Health) could look like. \nLast but not least\, there will be a panel discussion on the topic “Towards sunnier days: How to overcome the mental health crisis in academia?” opening the stage for different players of the academic system such as Jule Specht (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin)\, Martin Grund (Max Planck Institute Leipzig)\, Ralf Kurvers (Science of Intelligence)\, and Aite Kashef (Lise-Meitner-Gesellschaft). \nPlease use this link to register: https://bit.ly/mh-event2021 \nIf you have any questions\, please contact  scholar-minds@charite.de. \nHomepage: http://www.scholar-minds.net/ \nE-Mail: scholar-minds@charite.de \nTwitter: @BerlinMinds

SUMMARY:Workshop for Early-Career Researchers: “How To Review in Interdisciplinary Research”
DESCRIPTION:One major part of the scientific workflow is the publication of scientific results. An essential step on the way to the published item is the peer-review process\, in which other scientists evaluate submitted work. Their views\, recommendations and critique often strongly influence the decision of whether a submitted item is published or not. We assume that these peers are themselves experts on the topic they are reviewing\, and while this is most often true for reviews made on items that lay within a certain discipline\, more and more research is done across the boundaries of scientific disciplines\, which produces the publication of research items\, that may contain parts from vastly different scientific areas.\nIn addition\, many disciplines have their own “styles” when it comes to the review process.\nSo\, what to do as a reviewer when asked to assess a scientific work\, that lies only partially within your own area of expertise? This workshop will tackle this question through presenting experts’ views from different scientific areas\, a general discussion stage as well as a DIY part in which we will work on a guideline for interdisciplinary peer-reviews. \nRegistration deadline: 16 August 2021 \nOrganizers: Pia Bideau\, David Bierbach\, Andrzej Banburski \n  \n  \n
