Paul studied biology at the Humboldt University in Berlin. During his studies, he worked on optimizing the housing conditions of ornamental fish. The focus was on the oxygen balance in pet aquariums. For his PhD project he switched to behavioral biology. The aim of his research was to identify and reduce boredom in laboratory mice. In both research areas, animal welfare was the central aspect.
As a postdoc, at SCIoI,Paul investigates the intelligence of laboratory mice based on natural behavior developed in alternative housing systems, Project 40A, “Big Mouse Data”.
